Project
Background
In February
1997, the Society for the Study of Translation and Interpretation (SSTI)
of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators
(NAJIT) was incorporated for the purpose, among others, of conducting
research and undertaking projects pertaining to oral interpretation of
legal proceedings.
After months
of discussion between the Board of Directors of both NAJIT and SSTI and
outreach to the general membership, it was agreed that SSTI would accept
the mandate to begin the process of creating a universal credentialing
examination in the various languages represented within NAJIT's membership.
Because
Spanish is the language most heavily represented within NAJIT, it was
agreed that the first test would be in Spanish. This would help to generate
funds for the development of exams in languages other than Spanish. The
Spanish-language exam would serve as the prototype for the development
of exams in other languages, permitting NAJIT to move swiftly to meet
the credentialing needs of all its membership.
English/Spanish
Prototype Examination
The examination
will consist of three parts: Part I will be a multiple-choice written
knowledge, machine-scorable examination of English at the college level.
Part II will be similar to Part I in content. It will be a multiple-choice
written knowledge, machine-scorable English/Spanish and Spanish/English
examination. Part III will be a monitored practical oral examination of
sight translation and consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.
Survey
Participation
As a first-step
in the development process of the Spanish-language examination, we are
asking you to assist us by responding to the following survey. Based upon
the survey analysis and other information, we will begin the work of creating
test materials and item development. This survey is part of a task analysis
that will provide us with information on the relative importance, criticality,
and frequency of specific performance domains in which a judiciary interpreter
must be proficient.
